Automation and DevOps

What is Devops?

DevOps is a portmanteau combining the words “development” and “operations”.  This embodies the core of DevOps, a cultural philosophy, set of practices, and tools that organize developers, operations, and management, under the same common objective, delivering quality software rapidly and reliably.

The core of DevOps is the automation of traditionally manual and slow processes including continuous integration and continuous delivery, often abbreviated as CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and monitoring and logging.

Continuous Integration

A software development practice where developers merge code into a central repository, which is automatically tested and built. The goal is to improve quality and identify defective code faster.

Continuous Delivery

A software development practice where code changes are automatically tested, built, and deployed to a test and/or production environment.

Infrastructure as Code

Cloud based infrastructure can be provisioned and managed using code and a software development framework. This allows versioning infrastructure, CI/CD, and achieve scale that is impractical otherwise.

Monitoring and Logging

Actively recording infrastructure and application metrics and logs centrally. Analyzing data to gauge performance impacts of changes and identifying causes of problems and failures.

Why DevOps?

Customers increasingly demand immediate access to new features and technologies and are intolerant of buggy, unstable, and insecure software. Continuous integration and continuous delivery along with monitoring and logging enable faster delivery of updates to the customer, while providing more security and reliability. Managing infrastructure as code allows reliable and scalable application environments increasing application quality by allowing identical development, testing, and production environments and rapid environment duplication.

Upward Chart
Velocity

Implementing CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and monitoring and logging will make your development cycles shorter, allowing you to deliver features and functionality to your customers faster.

Upward Trend
Reliability

DevOps practices automate formerly manual and error prone tasks. Automation ensures that tasks are done exactly the same every time, increasing overall reliability of both your software and infrastructure.

Growing
Security

Automated testing, infrastructure as code, and monitoring and logging increasingly eliminate manual access to servers and leave a trail of access. Security concerns can be identified and fixed quickly across all environments.

Chart
Scalability

Without automation, it is impractical to run an internet scale application. Infrastructure as code enables quickly and easily scaling applications up or down, precisely reproducing exact copies of development, test, and production environments, and enables blue-green application deployments.

Monitoring and logging make it practical to manage internet scale infrastructure.

User Add
Competitive

Providing customers with new features and functionality increases the speed of feedback, allowing faster innovation. Competitors providing faster access to new features and functionality will gain a competitive advantage.

Talent is increasingly drawn to modern development practices. Employees are free to innovate when they are no longer performing manual and repetitive tasks .
